How to clean different types of blinds
Share
Cleaning your blinds is a chore that can often be overlooked during weekly cleans, but it significantly impacts your home's appearance and air quality. Dust-free blinds not only look better but also help reduce allergens in your living space.
With various types of blinds available, choosing the right cleaning method can be confusing. Always consult the care instructions provided by your blinds’ manufacturer to prevent potential damage.
To assist you, we’ve compiled our top tips for cleaning different types of blinds commonly found in homes.
Venetian blinds
Venetian blinds, often made from timber, aluminium, or PVC, require specific cleaning techniques based on the material. Start by closing the slats flat, then wipe them with a microfibre cloth or use a vacuum. A stick vacuum like the Wertheim Evolution MAX converts to a handheld cleaner with a dusting brush attachment, ideal for gently removing dust from delicate slats.
If your blinds have stains or grime, gently clean them with water and a material-safe cleaning solution. Aluminium blinds can handle mild cleaners or soapy water, while wood blinds require more care. For wood, try a gentle wood cleaner or a diluted vinegar mixture. Always dry the blinds with a soft cloth immediately to prevent water damage.
Roller blinds and Roman blinds
Roller and Roman blinds, typically made from fabric, can be easily vacuumed to remove dust. Use an upholstery tool or dusting brush attachment to vacuum from top to bottom. Spot treat stains with water, mild detergent, and a soft cloth, dabbing gently for the best results.
If your blinds are uncoated fabric and heavily soiled, you may be able to remove them for soaking in a diluted detergent solution. Some blinds are even machine-washable. For materials prone to water damage, consider steam cleaning with a versatile machine like the Wertheim Pro Multi Steamer to lift grime and reduce odours. Take care not to scald the fabric.
Vertical blinds
Vertical blinds can be cleaned similarly to Venetian or roller blinds. Use a fabric-safe vacuum attachment to clean each panel from top to bottom. Wipe down the blinds with a mild detergent and a soft cloth, focusing on stains and tough marks.
After cleaning, dry the blinds with a clean cloth to prevent mildew and water damage.
General tips
- Dust or vacuum your blinds weekly to prevent dust build-up, reducing the need for intensive cleaning.
- Remember to clean both sides of your blinds, including the backside of roller blinds and both sides of each Venetian slat.
- When vacuuming, always work from top to bottom to catch any falling dust.
- If your blinds are hard to reach or heavily soiled, consider removing them for easier cleaning while flat on the ground.
- Rinse off any detergent or cleaning solution thoroughly to prevent future dust from sticking and building up faster.
- Always dry your blinds thoroughly after cleaning to avoid mould, mildew, and water damage.
